In 2017, the HSE provided clear guidance on the design of a good LEV system in HSG258 ‘Controlling airborne contaminants at work: A guide to local exhaust ventilation (LEV). It describes the principles of deciding on, designing, commissioning and testing effective LEV.
More recently in 2022, the HSE produce the report HSE’s Occupational Lung Disease in Great Britain 2022 report, stating that more than 12,000 lung disease deaths have been related to air-borne exposure. LEV systems are necessary because they protect workers from the harmful effects of dust, fumes, and vapours that can be generated by a wide variety of industrial processes. Without LEV systems, workers would be exposed to hazardous substances on a regular basis, putting them at risk of serious occupational diseases such chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cancer.
The regulations for LEV testing companies are set out by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) guidelines. It’s mandatory that every employer should maintain working conditions for the employees, and any employer who uses LEV techniques in the workplace must have the equipment examined and tested every 14 months to ensure it’s working effectively and safely.
